Valentines DaySaturday 30th of January 2010 10:43:41 AM

Well it is that time of year againTo be wined and dined and showered with flowers and special things...perhaps even getting engaged...ok ok maybe a little too optimistic but to us girlies it is a day that we get to be spoiled.  For the fellas they either love it or run for the hills.  But guys remember this.. a fella who spoils now will be spoiled in return so get your skates on and get that specail person and very special gift just to let them know that you love them and appreciate them.   And girls  update your wish list so your fella can see exactly what you want and get you the right item size and colour that will make the day the best. May all your wishes come true

To Buy or Not to Buy, That Is the QuestionWednesday 27th of May 2009 02:47:52 PM

Today I got an invitation to a wedding, yesterday I got an invite to the twenty-first birthday of my friend’s son, and tomorrow I will help organize a retirement party for a dear friend.

Normally I would be full of excitement with all the events and parties to attend, but as I sit here drinking my morning coffee and reflect upon the upcoming events, the feeling of dread strangely replaces that feeling of excitement. Parties mean gifts and gifts mean shopping.

I remember one Christmas a few years back I spend days walking around shops and departments stores wondering what would be a good gift to buy for an old friend who had everything. I knew her well so I saw a lovely sweater in a wool blend that would just great with her new dress I saw her in a few days previous. Imagine my horror when I saw her a few weeks later in the returns department taking the very gift I spent hours and days looking for back for an exchange. Weeks later I finally got up the courage to tell her I saw her returning my gift and asked her why. “It was lovely but I can’t wear anything wool.” She was a dear friend and I didn’t know this. Did I not listen, or did I not take notice of what she wore a lot of or was it just a simple error we all make. That awful event follows me each time I have to buy a present.

Get vouchers, I hear myself say. That is a good idea but so impersonal. Is it a lazy way out or an easier option? What do I do when someone gives me vouchers, I ask. Well I usually squander them on useless things here and there because I have them but never usually end up with any one thing to say it was a present.

With the internet such as it is, shopping is a lot easier; but how well do you know your friends and families tastes? Are we all getting lazy or should we spend a little more time learning about the people who we care about—their likes and dislikes. If we were all a little more observant, aside from the knowledge that the gift you bought for that occasion was exactly what they wanted, at best would we all end up with having more space in that special drawer … you know the one. It’s the one that is loaded with all the unwanted gifts that you have received.

A Mothers Special DayFriday 27th of February 2009 09:46:21 AM

As Mother’s Day soon approaches I reflect on how special Mothers are. My mother passed away several years ago but every Mother’s Day I stop and remember her.

How we talked and laughed and how each year I tried to make Mother’s Day a little bit better than the last one.

I would go into her room and examine all the perfumes to see if they had run out, or I would look through her closet to see if she had bought anything new so I could match something up with the outfit.

I knew the kind of flowers she loved and would listen carefully to conversations for a hint about something she wanted to do or a new restaurant she wanted to try. I would look at the size tags to make sure I got the size correct size. As I grew older and moved away these things became more difficult to do but I made sure I called her and sent flowers and a special card.

Those days seems like a distant memory now and as a mother now myself with my children grown I can still remember her as if it was yesterday. I can still smell the perfume she wore when I go to the department store I still look for things she would have liked. But most of all I remember her laugh, sometimes at me for doing the unthinkable, and sometimes with me when we watched her favorite comedy shows.

My message is just a reminder to cherish the times you have now with your mother. Spoil her on Mother’s Day and think of her every day. The time with her passes quickly but the memories will last forever.

Ten Commandments of Valentine’s DayWednesday 18th of February 2009 11:32:42 AM

Because Valentine’s Day is a special day, it is important that the gift you give your loved one is one that brings her joy, makes her feel appreciated, and lets her know that you bothered to find out what is truly special to them. Here are some tips to help.

1. Right ring size. This is really important. Get it right the first time. Take a ring that she wears often with you when you go to pick it out so you get it right the first time.

2. Right color. Know his or her special color. The color you know they like.

3. Right clothes size. Just because she looks like a size ten, don’t assume she is. This might make it your last Valentine’s Day together. Check out the sizes on the some of her favorite clothes before heading to the store.

4. Right perfume or aftershave. Both sexes need to get this right, too. Just because YOU like the smell doesn’t mean your date does. Take a whiff of what she is already wearing and try to stay in the same theme.

5. The right bouquet of flowers. Sometimes it’s nice to be a little different, so pay attention to what she has liked in the past. Get something unique. Not the same old roses everyone else is getting.

6. That little table in the corner. Candlelight and romance and THE RIGHT choice in the food that she likes. Pick a restaurant that has her favorite foods. Don’t assume she loves a good sirloin when she prefers the perfect fish dish.

7. Be adventurous. Take your lover to see a favorite film or buy him his favorite CD .

8. The SEXY underwear. Be sure you know what she will wear and what she won’t. You may think it looks great on that model in the store but be careful here. Remember GUYS: know her size.

9. Know your man. Ladies can make mistakes also, so be sure you know his collar size when buying a shirt.

10. Don’t assume: Know what your partner is into, what he like, and what he doesn’t. Look for little tips along the way. Encourage him to make a list or register on a wish list.
